How to Discuss Finances Over the Holidays

How to Discuss Finances Over the Holidays

December 20, 2022

The most wonderful time of the year is here! There’s truly nothing like spending quality time with family and friends over Christmas. While we all enjoy bonding with family over funny stories or happy memories, this time of year also provides an opportunity to have important financial conversations. Read on to learn more about how to discuss finances over the holidays!

Why Discuss Finances this Time of Year?

We understand that discussing financial matters can be stressful, but it should be done sooner or later. Failing to talk about topics such as an estate plan or your decisions regarding your wealth can result in increased stress and frustration in an emergency. Ensuring that your parents have a solid estate plan in place can give you peace of mind. The holidays are a good opportunity to discuss finances since family members will be together and in good spirits. At this time of year, your family members are free of work and day-to-day distractions making it an ideal time to talk about finances.

Structuring a Family Financial Discussion

Believe it or not, you can actually have a productive financial conversation with your family without putting a damper on holiday festivities! Depending on your family dynamics, it may be better for you to start off by slowly introducing the topic into smaller conversations versus a group conversation. Another easy way to ease into the topic is by asking your parents for advice regarding estate planning, wealth management, or whatever you’re interested in learning. Keep in mind that you’re doing this for the entire family’s benefit, not to determine what you’ll get out of it. We strongly recommend talking to your financial advisor prior to having a family financial discussion. Your advisor can walk you through ways to start the discussion, questions to ask, and any other considerations you should be aware of.

If you’ve been worried about your family’s financial situation, now is the time to bring it up while everyone's home for the holidays. We understand you may feel inclined to keep conversations lighthearted during this time of year. Your financial advisor is happy to help you come up with a plan of action for discussing finances over the holidays that will work for you and your family.  Contact your financial advisor or give us a call to learn more!
